Charles Hamilton Houston Internship Program

Career development goes hand-in-hand with academic development, and there is no better career development vehicle than an internship. In addition to building and expanding skills that are valuable in the workplace, internships allow students to gain exposure to new career fields, expand their professional networks, and confirm or discover interests and values, both professional and personal. In addition, the majority of employers expect college graduates to have completed at least 1-2 internships during their time in school, and internship participation leads to stronger post-graduate career outcomes.

The Charles Hamilton Houston Internship Program was created to ensure access to substantive, meaningful paid summer internships before they graduate through a combination of preparatory and skill development workshops and stipends for unpaid summer internship opportunities.  Additionally, students are supported through one-on-one internship advising appointments along with resume and internship application drop-in clinics.

About Charles Hamilton Houston

The Houston Program is named in honor of Amherst alumnus Charles Hamilton Houston, class of 1915.  Houston went on to become the first African-American editor of the Harvard Law Review, a dean at the Howard University School of Law, and a mentor to a generation of African-American lawyers, most notably Thurgood Marshall.
